CompuLab’s Fit-PC Slim: Tiniest Windows XP system

Compulab has introduced a fanless PC, roughly the size of a paperback book, that consumes a mere 3 to 5 watts of power. The "fit-PC" comes with Linux preinstalled, and is intended to fit where conventional PCs won't, according to the Haifa, Israel-based company.
Compulab says the fit-PC is based on the company's CM-iGLX computer-on-module (COM), touted as the world's smallest LX800-based single-board computer when it was introduced last fall. The module has a 500 MHz AMD Geode LX800 processor, and is equipped with 256 MB of DDR RAM and up to 512 MB of NAND flash.

Compulab lists the following additional features and specifications for the fit-PC:

Although the fit-PC comes with Linux pre-installed, Windows XP is "easily installable" via a USB CD-ROM drive, Compulab said. The system's embedded Linux OS reportedly is currently based on Gentoo, using a 2.6.20 kernel.

HP HDX16, HDX18 Entertainment Laptops

HP has announced the HP HDX16 and HDX18 entertainment notebook PCs, featuring high-definition playback support, built-in TV tuners, Blu-ray technology, and a new chassis design.

Both notebooks include built-in Wi-Fi networking, along with home-theater-quality audio/video options that include Altec Lansing speakers, an HP Triple Bass subwoofer and Dolby Home Theater software.

The HDX16 is a midsize notebook with a 16-inch diagonal widescreen with 720- or 1,080-pixel resolution display. The HDX18 is a powerful and visually captivating full-size notebook with an 18.4-inch diagonal Ultra BrightView 1,080-pixel screen and enthusiast-class graphics capabilities.

Additionally, the HP HDX notebook PCs feature HP MediaSmart, which allows consumers to enjoy photos, listen to music and watch movies in high definition.

The HP HDX16 starts at $1,299, while the HP HDX18 starts at $1,549. Both are expected to be available starting later this month.

Sony Soutina .... Very Impressive

First seen as a concept a year back, Sony's tubular speaker is set to go into production under the name the Sony Soutina.

This gorgeous speaker from Sony uses transparent organic glass to make up the tubing which vibrates and expands the sound to 360 degrees. The Soutina speaker has a frequency response of 50Hz – 20,000Hz.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II

Details of the eagerly awaited full frame Canon 5D Mark II dSLR are out. The camera packs a whopping 16MP full frame sensor, comes with full weather sealing and anti-dust features, and has the ability to rattle out images at 6 FPS.

The full-frame sensor has been boosted up to 21.1 megapixels, the LCD is a high-resolution 3-inch beauty (like more recently released competitors), Live View shooting has been added, the sensitivity range has been raised to ISO 50 - ISO 25,600, auto focus points have been bumped from 9 to 15 points, and continuous shooting speed has been bumped from 3- to 3.9fps. Best of all, however, Canon has added HD (1920×1080,16:9) video capture at 30 fps (there’s also a standard TV quality 640×480, 4:3 setting as well), besting recently announced competitors like the Nikon D700 and Sony Alpha DSLR-A900. In fact, the consumer-oriented Nikon D90 is the only other dSLR to offer a video mode at the moment.

Canon plans to ship the 5D Mark II by the end of November for $2,699 (body-only) or in a kit version with the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM zoom lens $3,499, making it very competitively priced compared to the competition.

3M reveals MPro110 pocket projector

Small, lightweight and flexible: With the Micro Professional projector 3M MPro 110 sets projection specialist 3M mainly on the target group of professionals, who often are the presentations but do not take so much technology.

Their German division has recently announced that their prototype will soon become a reality. The MPro110 uses LCoS display technology to display VGA (640 x 480) resolution. It also uses an LED lamp, which means no fan noise. The LED is expected to display images bright enough to be seen in a brightly lit room. This feature is ideal for traveling presenters. The MPro110 weighs only 0.3 lbs and is less than an inch high. It is able to display an image up to 50 inches, diagonally. The connections for this device are few but useful including a VGA connection and a composite video connection. These connections allow the MPro110 to be used in a variety of situations from including office presentations, playing games, or watching movies. Cowon S9

For those of you that like your media players, then the new Cowon S9 Curve is one to check out.

The Cowon S9 has a curved backside and features a 3.3 inch color AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with 480x272px resolution and 16m colors.AMOLED screens are capable of lighting themselves and does not require backlighting like LCD screens. The Bluetooth support is listed as A2DP and AVRCP compatible which means audio streaming and remote controlling, and no support for headset mode or file transfer is listed. The interface will auto rotate as you turn the player and be flash, so hopefully that means it's skinable right out of the box. With a 500 MHz dual core CPU it should hopefully be rather quick. It comes with 9 EQ presets and like other Cowon players it does both Ogg Vorbis and FLAC. Size wise it will be 57.08 x 105.75 x 12.7 mm

It's the video aspect of the S9 that will disappoint many people. It only plays at the screens native resolution, which is rubbish in my opinion. This is most likely to make sure such players as the O2 have a market as well, but in doing so they limited a player which could be the new big hit and native Xvid support without resolution limits would definitely help towards that. It does do WMV and AVI (prob Xvid) like the D2 and h.264 has been added as a third supported video format. This means better quality per megabyte of data, and it might mean it will play back PSP formatted video. Don't get your hopes up however as h.264 compatible portable players tend to be extremely picky on what they will play back. The video support will do the job, but it could have been soooo much better - especially since the player has TV out, a feature that was barely a novelty on the D2.

Lastly, the capacity. A lot of people have been pointing out that this thing doesn't have memory expansion, something that's become a must have after the reign of the D2. With capacities up to 16GB at release and 32GB later, it isn't ever capable of reaching the D2's 48GB combined storage space. Not to mention the 32GB version will most likely be rather expensive, maybe more than people are willing to pay.

Lenovo Ideapad s10

Lenovo is joining the ranks of companies that believe thin is in.

Lenovo officially announced this morning its IdeaPad S10 - a 10-inch mini-notebook running the 1.6GHz Intel Atom chipset. Do we have a MSI Wind or Eee PC 1000H killer on our hands? Quite possibly.

Two configurations of the 9.8 x 7.2 x .8-1.08-inch and 2.4-pound S10 will be available in the U.S. Priced at $399, one will have 512MB of RAM and an 80GB hard drive. The other marked at $449.99 will have 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive. The specs seem to indicate that the system will support 2GB of RAM, so we assume swapping out RAM will be easy.

Initially the netbook will come preloaded with Microsoft Windows XP. However, Lenovo told us that a version of the S10 running Linpus Linux will be available is other countries.

We cannot wait to get our hands on the mini-notebook as the keyboard is reportedly “85 percent of the size of a full-function notebook PC’s keyboard.” A close look at the pictures in the gallery below strongly suggest a large and comfortable touchpad with dedicated right and left mouse buttons. The touchpad will support multi-touch gestures. The 10-inch 1024 x 600-pixel (WSVGA) resolution screen also looks extremely promising and is LED backlit for power saving. The speakers lining the front of the system also give it a different look and will hopefully blast out some decent sound as they aren’t buried on the bottom.

Lenovo has seemed to work in all the important ports. The netbook includes Bluetooth connectivity, 802.11b/g , and an ExpressCard for popping in a mobile broadband card. It also sports a LAN connection and VGA-out. It has a 1.3-megapixel webcam, two USB ports, mic and headphone jacks, and a 4-in-1 card reader. I am hesitant about only 2 USB ports.

As for battery life, Lenovo is promising that the system will be available with a 3-cell battery, capable of 3 hours, and 6-cell, capable of lasting 6 hours.

The IdeaPad S10 will come in white, black, and a glossy ruby red. It will be on retail shelves in the U.S. on September 28 and perhaps on Lenovo.com a bit earlier. It will be available in China, however, on September 5 and in the far east on September 10

Cowon iAudio 7 MP3 player

The iAudio 7 DAP player has been released by Cowon. You may have seen them before with the ever creative iAudio 6 player. The screen is just 1.3 inches making the player very small. The screen can be display 260k colours. It now uses flash memory (8GB) rather then the 0.85 inch disk drive in version 6. Support has been added for FLAC and OGG. What impresses me most, other then the looks of the device, is that it has a lithium polymer battery which will last 60 hours. The DAP can be charged via USB which is great if you are out and about travelling. The iAudio 7 player will set you back $246 for the 8GB flash version.

The V550 Nano features a Clip-and-Go dock for attaching the V550 Nano to your laptop. This dock is a peg with an adhesive back that sticks to the outside of your laptop. The mouse itself has a hole on the underside that snaps on to the Clip-and-Go peg. Logitech includes a Clip-and-Go removal tool with the mouse, which you can use to remove the peg from your laptop.

Creative ZEN Mozaic

The Creative ZEN Mozaic is the latest example of Creative's long-standing tradition of developing good-looking budget portable media players. The Mozaic comes in 2GB ($59.99 direct), 4GB ($79.99), and 8GB ($119.99) capacities, and its control pad, as its name would suggest, looks a lot like a tile mosaic. It's the kind of player that puts fashion before function, but that doesn't mean the Mozaic is a clunker.

Since it is a new type of player (with an extremely awful design, if I might add), here are the specifications for your perusal.

Sony Ericsson announces the slim and elegant T700

Sony has announced the new slim phone, the Sony Ericsson T700. At a thickness of 10mm, the phone falls into the sleek and slim category, which includes Motorola L6 and L7 as well as Nokia 6300 and 5310 Xpress Music.

Packed with moderate features, T700 bears a faint resemblance with the T650 in the T-Series phones. Touted as a mid-range phone, the sleek and shiny T700 is impressive in terms of price point and form factor, although it s not high on any new functionality.

Hitachi's New Blu-ray Camcorder: DZ-BD10HA

The Hitachi model DZ-BD10HA model Blu-ray Hybrid with built-in 30GB hard disk drive (HDD) is priced at a Manufacturers Advertised Price (MAP) of $999. The camcorder will be available in Japan on August 9th and will be available in North America in September 2008.

A step above from its predecessor announced last year, the DZ-BD10HA from Hitachi's Consumer Group contains several new features and improvements. A newly developed 7 mega pixel CMOS image sensor, which captures rich and vibrant videos and stills in FullHD (1920 x 1080) High Definition. The new DZ-BD10HA can also record up to 4 hours 20 minutes of 1920x1080 video or 8 hours 40 minutes of 1440x1080 video onto the built-in 30 GB HDD. Additionally, the built-in SDHC card slot provides added flexibility by allowing for Full HD video and still recordings.

The new DZ-BD10HA also offers a dubbing function that allows Full HD video to be transferred with the single push of a button from either the HDD or SDHC card to the BD drive, all within the camcorder, without having to connect to a PC. Editing functions such as split, splice, delete, merge, and transitions can also be performed within the camcorder before dubbing for additional functionality. The Transcoding feature allows for the camcorder to transfer full HD videos off the HDD or SDHC card to standard definition DVD discs for the sharing of videos with friends and family who may not own a Blu-ray player yet.

Another new feature added to this year's camcorder is face detection, which automatically detects and focuses on faces to provide the most true to life colour accuracy and clarity. Dell launches Latitude range of business laptops

Dell just announced a bunch of laptops, but these two are particularly interesting to us because we love ultra-portables (who doesn't?). The 12.1" Latitude E4200 weighs only 2.2 Lbs (thanks partly to its SSD drive), making it the lightest Latitude laptop ever. And it does that while preserving a size that allows to have a comfortable keyboard. Secondly, the E4300 is a 13.3", which is probably the best compromise between portability and work comfort. It weighs 3.39lbs. Both laptops feature a 1280x800 resolution display
The Latitude E6400 and E6500 are replacing the Latitude D630 and D830 as the new 14- and 15.4-inch form factors, respectively. Both have a magnesium-alloy backbone like their predecessors, but you'll notice that Dell has moved away from a matted silver finish in favor of brushed aluminum paint. Dell understands that design, especially in this age, is an important business element, which is why red-and-blue-color schemes will also be available in the September 2008 timeframe. The company annonuced a new brand of laptops "IdeaPad" that complements their famous ThinkPad notebooks and ThinkCentre desktops. The first notebooks to be introduced under IdeaPad brand are Intel Centrino processor technology powered Y710. The HSDPA model e2 is compatible with GPRS/EDGE networks and is SIM-free and network unlocked, meaning customers won't be handcuffed to a particular carrier. While the e2 is available for sale in the United States, the HSDPA model will not be. Still, we see no reason why OQO wouldn't bring the device to the U.S., as the company earlier this year released a similar device sporting 3G EV-DO networking.

Microsoft has converted another mobile phone manufacturer again. Sony Ericsson and Microsoft has joined hand and revealed this new phone called XPERIA X1 smartphone, made by Sony Ericsson with the power of Windows Mobile, of course.

The news came out during the MWC (Mobile World Congress). The XPERIA X1 smartphone will feature a slider and a QWERTY keyboard. The phone will feature 3-inch VGA display (640 x 480???). It also has a high-finish metal body. The phone will also let you do things like other Windows Mobile devices. Navigating the web, multimedia and applications using a panel system that can be access by your finger tips.

The phone will be available at the second half of this year. This will be a great addition to Sony Ericsson's lineup and also Windows Mobile devices. Get ready, argonauts -- Panasonic's Atom-based UMPC Toughbook is gearing up to ship out soon.

Although previewed multiple times, the computer should now be made official and will be the first known tablet to use the ultra-efficient, long battery life processor while also adding a rugged design. The 5.6-inch touchscreen is bordered by a shockproof rubber casing that covers ports that aren't in use and keeps out dust and water.

Most specifications are still under guard, though the very small Toughbook will run Windows Vista and is likely to user a lower-clocked version of the Atom than the 1.6GHz chip found in mini notebooks, which have more space for cooling. One preview from Panasonic pointed to an actual launch in autumn, though whether this is for the company's native Japan or for other countries wasn't specified at the time.

Digital Information Development (DID) has developed a highly portable virtual piano that is played with a keyboard consisting of projected laser beams.
The box-shaped device measures about 10 x 3 x 3 cm (4 x 1 x 1 in.) and weighs about 100 grams (3.5 oz.). Using a red semiconductor laser module and holographic optical element, the device projects a 25-key 2-octave keyboard onto the surface in front of it (black surfaces don’t work because they absorb the light). A CMOS camera module and infrared (invisible) red semiconductor laser module detect which keys are touched, and the corresponding notes are emitted from speakers built into the device. Chords can also be played, and DID claims it is technically possible to reproduce weighted notes (but presumably not with this version).

The keyboard has 3 other voices in addition to piano — organ, pipe organ and harpsichord. It is scheduled for release in Japan in November 2006 and is expected to cost around 15,000 yen (US$130).

DID says that a virtual 88-key grand piano can be created by increasing the size of the device.
